Activities

The Hatfield Student Organization is very active during the year to promote interactions between graduate students, faculty, and staff and to increase opportunities for professional development.

HsO Meetings - Whenever we get the urge, we get together, eat pizza, and talk business. At our fall meeting, held in mid-November, we elect new officers (new officers take over on January 1st), recruit two speakers for the winter term HsO Student Symposium, and begin organizing our annual Holiday Raffle. At the winter meeting, held in mid-February, we debrief from the Holiday Raffle, start organizing for the Scholar Exchange, and brainstorm new ideas for activities.

HsO Holiday Raffle - At the HMSC Holiday party, the Hatfield Student Organization organizes a raffle of items donated by community members and local businesses to raise money for HsO expenses throughout the year. A portion of this year's proceeds were used to buy items for donation to My Sister's Place. Check out our donation pile.

HsO Student Symposia - Scheduled as part of the regular Thursday afternoon Hatfield seminar series, the HSS are an opportunity for students to hone their speaking skills and promote their research in front of the local audience. Email if you would like to present as part of an HsO Student Symposium.

OIMB/HMSC Scholar Exchange - Graduate students from HMSC and the Oregon Institute of Marine Biology in Coos Bay get together annually to compare research, socialize, and battle on the field of sport. We've got pictures of the 2008 exchange at OIMB here, and the 2007 exchange at HMSC here.

HMSC Donut Hour - Wednesday mornings, 10am in the Staff Lounge. HsO (and HMSC donors) provide coffee and donuts to promote conversation and interaction between faculty, staff, and students. Bring your own mug, volunteer to bring donuts, and donations are always gladly accepted.
Check out the Donut Announcement Blog!

HsO Reading Group - We get together every Wednesday, 8:30am, in the Guin Library, to discuss something interesting from the scientific literature. Come join us in our reading and discussion.

HsO Top Chef - We periodically challenge the HMSC Community's top chefs to put their finest creations on the line in direct competition. On October 14th, we challenge HMSC's bakers to present their finest fruit pies for judging in our first ever Harvest Fruit Cook-off. Check out pictures and recipes from the spring 2008 Chili Championship here.

HsO Travel Awards - The HsO Travel Award Program fulfills our goal of increasing opportunities for professional development of students by assisting HsO members in presenting their research at local, regional, or national scientific conferences. There are two award deadlines per year, April 15th and November 15th. Check out the HsO Travel Award announcement here.

HMSC Olympiad/World Championships - We challenge the HMSC community to put their best athletes on the field in semi-deadly annual competition. Check out pictures and results from the 2008 HMSC Olympiad here.

Miscellaneous and Sporting Activities - The HsO also participates in local community activities to raise awareness of the Hatfield Marine Science Center and its students. In 2007 and 2008, the HsO fielded teams at the Newport Fishermen's Wives Survival Suit Races (in 2007 we finished 12th overall, pictures here, in 2008 we finished at the back of the pack (but looked awesome doing it), pictures here and here, video here). We also took part in the Newport Sprint Triathlon in both 2007 and 2008 (we finished 4th in our class both years, pictures from the 2008 race here). We're always looking for ideas on new activities to take part in, so email your suggestions.
