Downloading and Completing Applications

Submitting Applications by Email
- Beware! Application files opened in default "Preview" mode from your internet
browser will not save to your desktop and is not submittable by email. Electronic pdf forms should be
downloaded, opened and completed using the free Adobe Acrobat Reader
9.0 or later available online or Adobe Acrobat Professional. To download the application
"right click" or hold the control button down while clicking on link. Choose "save link
as" or "save target as" and save the fillable REU application to your desktop.
- Completed applications once in a secure data file format (.xfdf or .fdf) are only viewable by our office.
- E-applications and letters of recommendation via email are strongly enouraged.
- For applications click the "Submit by Email" button. This will automatically generate a data file (.xfdf/.fdf for Acrobat
Reader or .pdf for Acrobat Pro) of your application attached to an email addressed to
firstname.lastname@example.org from your email account, if you are using a desktop email
application (Microsoft Outlook, Eudora or Mail).
- If you are using internet email (gmail,hotmail, yahoo, etc), the data file will
need to be attached to your email manually and addressed to email@example.com.
If the internet email option does not appear when clicking the "submit by email" button, hold the "Alternate"
button down while clicking on the "submit by email" button to be able to select the email client.
- Include in the E-mail Subject Heading: LastName_FirstInitial_OSUREUapplication
- Save and print your application for your records. Note: Completed applications can only be saved
using Adobe Acrobat Professional. The free version of Adobe Acrobat Reader only allows for printing and submitting
of completed applications.
- E-Application Data Files or PDFs should be sent with the following label convention:
- Data File (.xfdf or .fdf)

Two letters of recommendation are required. Letters can be emailed directly from referees to the HMSC Director's Office: firstname.lastname@example.org.
TIP: Give the people writing your letters information that will make it easier for them to write you a strong recommendation.
Recommendations generally come from your professors rather than, for example, family friends or your supervisor from a part time job. Your professors know more about your academic skills and your potential to excel in an REU program.
Transcripts are not needed with intial application. Applicants who are accepted into the
program will be required to provide an official transcript for verification.
Referees are asked to assess your academic abilities, accomplishments, motivation, work habits, potential as a researcher and ability to participate in and benefit from a research internship program in marine science. Letters of recommendation are heavily relied on by the selection committee.
All students who are offered a position at this REU Site have until March 15th or
later to accept or reject the offer.
Funding for this REU site is provide by the National Science Foundation's Division of Ocean
Science's located in Arlington, VA. The NSF contact for this program is Lisa Rom,

REU site directly for application information.
