| Purpose: |
To foster education in the marine sciences
by providing financial support to undergraduate or graduate
students pursuing marine science related fields at OSU.
|
| Support Areas: |
Students whose major study emphasis is marine biology,
particularly mammals. Preference for undergraduates will be given to students
involved in Hatfield Marine Science Center public or K-12
education programs as interns.
|
| Application: |
Students must submit:- One-page project description of activities to be undertaken
in the fellowship, including statement of academic goals
in marine biology. It should address how the project will
contribute to applicant’s career goals / aspirations.
- Required budget (maximum $3,000);
- Letter of support by faculty member.

| Duration: |
One calendar year. The recipient will be expected to prepare a poster on
proposed research at the beginning (June 2012) and a report on results at the end
of the year (June 2013) at the annual HMSC-Markham Awards Symposium.

Applicants with previous awards from HMSC should clearly indicate
the level of past support, be certain that reporting requirements
have been met, and provide a paragraph describing past progress
or results (include in the one-page project description and statement of academic goals).
The criteria by which applicants will be evaluated include: scientific
merit (creativity and feasibility of proposed research and potential
for broader implications); academic qualifications and service activity (to
institution, community, profession); soundness of proposed budget;
and financial need.
