| Markham First Year Student Award
Background: Graduate students interested in working
at the Hatfield Marine Science Center generally must spend 9 months
in Corvallis taking coursework. Professors at the HMSC who recruit
these students often have difficulty funding the first year, and
this support has been identified as a barrier to increasing graduate
student numbers at the HMSC.
Purpose: This award represents one-time funding
up to $12,000 to support an incoming, first year graduate student
who plans to be resident at the HMSC after the first academic
year in Corvallis. It can support a stipend and
is intended to provide bridge funding until the student is resident
at the HMSC, when other sources of funding (e.g., from grants)
should be available.
Support Areas: First year Markham Award funds are traditionally used to support student stipends.
Application: Application is made by the major
professor on behalf of incoming students identified from applicants
in appropriate departments. Applications will be accepted from resident
HMSC faculty who intend to serve as the advisor of the incoming
student. Courtesy Faculty from agencies at HMSC are particularly
encouraged to apply for these funds if subsequent years’ funding
is available. Applications must include the following information:
- Resume, not to exceed 2 pages, and transcripts of the student
and brief (< 1 page) statement of research interests.
- Narrative, not to exceed 2 pages, from the intended advisor,
covering the following topics: i) How the student will fit into
the HMSC research environment and the likely research topics to
be addressed; ii) source of funding for support after the first
academic year in Corvallis; and iii) a brief statement of how
the funds will be spent. Applications from Courtesy Faculty should
identify regular academic faculty who will serve on student committees.
An important criterion for judging the application will be the
likelihood of funding availability to support the student after
the first 9 months.
Deadline for applications: March 4,
2013.
Decision to be announced by March 25, 2013.
