Purpose: |
To provide support for
graduate students doing shellfish aquaculture research at
the Hatfield Marine Science Center in Newport. Approximately
$800 will be awarded in 2008. |

Areas: |
Graduate students pursuing an M.S. or
Ph.D. degree which includes work with shellfish. |
| Eligibility: |
Master's or doctoral students working
with shellfish who show commitment and promise to their career
choice and who meet the graduate entrance requirements of the
university and the department in which they will study. |
| Application: |
Students must submit:
- Project description (not to exceed 2 pages) concisely
proposing the research problem to be investigated: defining
objectives, methods and significance of results. The hypothesis
to be tested must be clearly stated;
- Budget - explain how research supported by the requested funding fits in with your research program and the manner in which the funds will add value to the research; Identify other funding supporting this project (past HMSC awards);
- Resume (not to exceed 2 pages);
- Letter of recommendation by by faculty member.

& Amount: |
One year from date of award. An M.S.
student is eligible for funding for a maximum of two years and
a Ph.D. student for a maximum of three years.
A condition of the award is to prepare a poster (on proposed
research) at the annual HMSC-Markham Awards Symposium (June
’08), and to make a short presentation on results or
progress at the same event in subsequent year(s). |

Application Guidance:
Applications must be submitted as a complete package by the deadline.
Electronic submission, as a single PDF file by email will also be
accepted. NOTE: Instructions for applications must be
followed exactly or the application will not be considered.
Applicants with previous awards from HMSC should clearly indicate
the level of past support, be certain that reporting requirements
have been met, and provide a paragraph describing past progress
or results (include in the budget).
The criteria by which applicants will be evaluated include: scientific
merit (relevance and potential of proposed research to shellfish
aquaculture); use of HMSC facilities; academic and research experience;
service activity (to institution, community, profession); soundness of proposed
budget; and financial need.
