Bill Wick Marine Fisheries Award

 

Purpose: A memorial in honor of Oregon’s first Sea Grant Director, the Bill Wick Marine Fisheries Award supports graduate students in the areas of marine fisheries ecology, food processing, economics and marketing.
Amount: The award for 2008 is up to $4,000.
Application:

Students must submit:

  • Two-page statement of academic goals and summary of research (past and proposed research);
  • Two-page Budget and Narrative explaining and justifying how funds will be spent;
  • Resume, not to exceed 2 pages;
  • A letter of support from major professor.
Duration: One calendar year. The recipient will be expected to prepare a poster on proposed research at the beginning (June 2008) and a report on results at the end of the year (June 2009) at the annual HMSC-Markham Awards Symposium.

Applicants with previous awards from HMSC should clearly indicate the level of past support, be certain that reporting requirements have been met, and provide a paragraph describing past progress or results (include in the 2-page statement of academic goals and summary of research).

The criteria by which applicants will be evaluated include: scientific merit (creativity and feasibility of proposed research and potential for broader implications); academic qualifications and service activity (to institution, community, profession); soundness of proposed budget; and financial need.
