Instructors:
Dr. Chris Langdon and Dr. Tim Miller-Morgan
OSU,
Hatfield Marine Science Center
| Course
Description: |
6 credits |
The course will focus on both the concepts
and practice of marine aquaculture and aquarium sciences and will
be made up of a series of lectures, field trips and group projects.
Basic concepts of water quality, nutrition, genetics, disease
recognition, health management and biosecurity will be covered
in the first week. The application of these concepts to oyster
culture, salmon culture, marine ornamental and intensive recirculation
systems will be discussed in the subsequent three weeks. Students
will participate in daily hands-on laboratory experiences and
select a laboratory project and work in groups over the 4-week
period to produce written and oral reports. The projects will
be designed to introduce students to a wide range of culture techniques
and may take place at various facilities in the surrounding area.
Experts from OSU, HMSC, the surrounding community and other NW
institutions will be invited to teach parts of the course. Field
trips to a wide range of aquaculture and aquarium facilities will
take place, including the Oregon Coast Aquarium and the new Fall
Creek salmon hatchery.
The course will be designed for seniors and graduate students
but open to students from the Aquarium Science degree at OCCC
as well as professionals. |
