Course Description |
4 credits |
Comparative survey of eight major invertebrate
phyla (Porifera, Cnidaria, Platyhelminthes, Annelida, Mollusca,
Arthropoda, Echinodermata, Urochordata) and many lesser-known
phyla. Three areas of emphasis will be (1) invertebrate identification,
(2) natural history (diversity, habitat, feeding, behavior), and
(3) comparative anatomy (adaptive significance of morphological
structures). Laboratories and field trips will strongly supplement
lecture material. Activities will include field trips to coastal
habitats, the Oregon Coast Aquarium, and the HMSC Visitors’
Center; examination of live invertebrates in the laboratory. Because
of the timing of low tides, early morning field trips will be
scheduled on many days. Instructor will be available in the lab
most evenings as needed. This course will be an INTENSIVE, CHALLENGING
FIELD COURSE designed for seniors and graduate students. Students
should have at least one year of undergraduate-level biology. |
