Hatfield Marine Science Center Education Programs

Programs for clubs and organizations:

Boy Scouts

Earn credit towards merit badges at Oregon State University’s Hatfield Marine Science Center in Newport, Oregon.

• Programs are 2-2.5 hours long, must be scheduled in advance, and pre-registration and pre-payment is required.
• Cost is $10.00 per student ($60/class minimum).
• Additional Oregon Sea Grant Ocean Studies patches are available for $1.50 each.
  

Oceanography for Scouts

Discover the field of Oceanography and fulfill requirements for the Oceanography Merit Badge.

In this hands on investigation you will:

• Learn about tides, currents, tsunamis and El Niño
• Study the chemical composition of ocean waters and test your ability to determine various water densities
• Explore underwater topography, including ocean trenches, guyots and seamounts
• Create a plankton net, collect and view live plankton under the microscope and learn about their role in the food chain
• Investigate careers in oceanography, and learn how to prepare for them

Environmental Studies for Scouts

Learn about ecology and environmental sciences and fulfill requirements towards an Environmental Merit Badge.

This program includes work both in the lab and in the field at the Yaquina Bay estuary.
Scouts should wear waterproof boots/gear and prepare for weather.

In the Environmental Studies program:

• Learn about different habitats and the organisms that inhabit them, including endangered species
• Conduct ecology and water pollution experiments and fieldwork in the estuary to determine species number and diversity
• Explore issues like acid rain, oil spills, and endangered species
