Hatfield Marine Science Center Education Programs

Programs for clubs and organizations:

Boy Scouts

Earn credit towards merit badges at Oregon State University’s Hatfield Marine Science Center in Newport, Oregon.

• Class hours: Programs are two hours long.
• Cost: $8.50 per boy per session with a $50/class minimum.
• Oregon Sea Grant Ocean Studies event patches are included; additional patches can be purchased for $1.25 each.

Oceanography for Scouts

Discover the field of Oceanography and fulfill requirements for the Oceanography Merit Badge. This hands on investigation includes:

• Learning about tides, currents, tsunamis and El Niño.
• Studying the chemical composition of ocean waters and testing your ability to determine various water densities.
• Explore underwater topography, including ocean trenches, guyots and seamounts.
• View live phytoplankton and zooplankton under the microscope and learn about their role in the food chain.
• Discuss different careers in oceanography, and how to prepare for them.

Environmental Studies for Scouts

Learn about ecology and environmental sciences and fulfill requirements towards an Environmental Merit Badge. This program includes work both in the lab and in the field at the Yaquina Bay estuary. Scouts should wear waterproof boots/gear and prepare for weather. Environmental Studies program includes:

• Learning about habitats, ecosystems, endangered species and conservation.
• Ecology and water pollution experiments.
• Fieldwork in the estuary determining species number and diversity.
• Materials to begin a storm drain stenciling project in your area.
