Pre-Visit Activity Guide

Sand Sleuth Activity Station

Objective: The Students will be able to define the ten words given in the vocabulary list.

Share with your students the included vocabulary list.

puzzle graphic Vocabulary:
  1. Basalt: Hard, dark rock found in lava that has cooled and hardened.
  2. Coral: A hard, stony substance made up of the skeletons of many tiny sea animals. Usually white in color.
  3. Crystals: Any one of the regularly shaped pieces which many substances form when they become solids.
  4. Geologists: People who study rocks and minerals.
  5. Magnetic: Any piece of iron, steel, or lodestone that has the natural power to draw iron and steel to it.
  6. Magnetite: A dark rock that has magnetic properties. Sometimes called 'lodestone'.
  7. Quartz: A bright mineral usually found as clear, glassy crystals.
  8. Reef: A ridge of sand, coral, or rock that lies very near the surface of the water.
  9. Volcanic: Of or from a volcano.
  10. Weathered: To become seasoned, dried, hardened, or bleached by exposure to the weather or open air.
