Pre-Visit Activity Guide

Shells of the World Pre-Visit Guide

The goal of this activity is to teach students to group things by their common characteristics.

Objective: The students will gain practice grouping their fellow students by characteristics.

Objective: The students will make generalizations based on the characteristics of their group members.

 

puzzle graphic Split your class into groups of no more than six students.oned, dried, hardened, or bleached by exposure to the weather or open air.
puzzle graphic Have each group divide into two groups based on a common characteristic. Let the students pick their own characteristics.
Important note graphic Some examples could be: blue eyes vs. no blue eyes, long sleeves vs. short sleeves, boots vs. sneakers, glasses vs. no glasses.
puzzle graphic Have the each new group split into two more groups based on a new characteristic.
Important note graphic Make sure the groups identify at least three characteristics.
puzzle graphic Ask the students to make generalizations about the people in their group based on their characteristics.
puzzle graphic Have all of the groups come back together and share as a class what characteristics they used to split into their groups and what generalizations they were able to make.
