Map Description Cards
Proposed Area 1
The largest proposed area, it contains the most diversified habitats. About ten years ago, a scallop fishery here produced large catches, but were quickly depleted below harvestible numbers. Large ships often cross the upper southern end of the area.
Proposed Area 2
One of the smaller proposed areas, this area has minimal diversity. A scallop fishery here also occurred at the same time as in area one, with similar results. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has considered the area a possible site for dumping dredge material. Large ships often cross the western portion of the area.
Proposed Area 3
A large area, with both rock and sand areas.
Proposed Area 4
Though a relatively small area, it supports a large red sea urchin population and fishery, harvested by divers to supply a lucrative marker in Japan. In addition, it is the only offshore sport diving area for many miles. Sport divers must follow sport fish regulations, just like hook and line fishers.
Proposed Area 5
A very rich and diverse area with varied habitats. Large ships often cross the western edge.
Proposed Area 6
Although all the proposed areas have some kelp beds, this area has by far the largest.
