The Guin Library houses the collection that supports the research and teaching of the Center.
The 35,000 volumes and 310 current periodicals cover a broad range of marine-related topics including fisheries, aquaculture, oceanography, geology, environmental studies and biology. This breadth reflects the varied interests of the library’s users who include undergraduate students in residence for the academic term, resident graduate students, OSU faculty and staff, Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife marine region staff, and federal personnel working at the HMSC (NOAA,EPA and USFWS). All use electronic databases, OSU Libraries’ online catalog, and traditional methods to access both the local and main campus collections. Besides the physical collection, the library provides links to information throughout the world via the Internet. A service-minded staff of one professional and 1.5 FTE staff facilitates retrieval of international resources, teaches users information retrieval and evaluation, and maintains the collection.
Built in 1990 with funding from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and furnished with private funds, the comfortable physical space has good lighting, excellent study areas and adequate meeting space for the needs of students and researchers. To support computer needs, the library has 16 2.4 Ghz Pentium 4’s with 17” flat panel displays at different stations in the Library.
