Mark O. Hatfield is one of Oregon's most distinguished statesmen, having served as a state legislator and two-term Governor before joining the U.S. Senate in 1966 and serving more than 30 years. His contributions to the state and nation represent a legacy unmatched in Oregon's history.

As Chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee, Senator Hatfield helped guide federal spending towards health, education, and scientific research needs that often would have languished on Capitol Hill without his strong advocacy.

The transformation of OSU's marine science facility in Newport from its humble beginnings in 1965 into the world class marine research and education campus it has become would not have been possible without Senator Hatfield's visionary leadership and support. The Hatfield Marine Science Center was named in his honor in 1983.
