Hatfield Marine Science Center
Visitor Center

The summer interns are undergraduate students who can use the opportunities at the Hatfield Marine Science Visitor Center (HMSVC) for community service, field experience or the independent study requirements of their program. The zoology, botany, environmental science, forestry, fisheries and wildlife and marine resource management departments on campus are notified of intern position openings. Each spring HMSC Visitor Center recruits, interviews and hires three undergraduate students for the summer internships.

Internships

Position Duties

  • Work in the aquarium/visitor center of the Hatfield Marine Science Center
  • Assist visitors and volunteers
  • Introduce and show films
  • Lead estuary nature walks and conduct interpretative boat dock tours.
  • Assist in marine animal husbandry and exhibit evaluation.
  • Conduct science demonstrations for the visiting public

Educational outcomes for Interns

  • Gain practical experience at public interpretation of the results of current marine research.
  • Acquire skills in interacting with the public and developing informal science educational materials
  • Undergraduate credit, if approved

A mid-summer review will be conducted. This opportunity is useful to gauge how well expectations are being met and to set measurable goals for the second half of the internship. Information from exit interviews is used in implementing subsequent intern programs.

Student Responsibilities
  • Presentation at the Markham Symposium in June the year following their internship
  • 32 hours per week in interpretive duties; primarily estuary/dock public tours and floor coverage during volunteer shift change or closing
  • 8 hours per week on student projects; additional student time for completion of their project is expected

This project has two measures of success. This internship position enables HMSVC to more effectively educate our diverse audience. Additionally, the intern completes a special project that contributes to their professional career development.
