A RAS or Rapid Assesment Survey is a intensive evaluation of species for a specific geographical area or ecosystem.  The RAS may last one to three weeks and involves taxonomists specializing in different areas such as aquatic plants, mammals, invertebrates etc. PICES (North Pacific Marine Science Organization) has undertaken a multi-year program to evaluate the marine plants and invertebrates around the North Pacific Rim.
