Fish with with food potential for aquaculture

In the early 1990's aquaculture scientists from the Pacific Northwest met to discuss species that could be developed via aquaculture for enhancement and commercial purposes. The following list resulted from this meeting and identifies which species show the greatest potential for commercial aquaculture. The list was based on species with good yield and high price per pound (Nosho, T. and K. Freeman 1994):
1. Halibut
2. Sablefish
3. Petrale sole
4. Perch (surf, white, and blue)
5. Rockfish
6. Cabezon

In addition to the species listed above, the live fish market presents opportunites for species development for aquaculture. Click here to view information about the live fish market.

The following tables identify native finfish and invertebrates that have great aquaculture potential for food. The tables are accurate as of 2003 and will change with future fisheries and aquaculture developments. Species have been listed in alphabetical order by common name.
