Salmon and Hatcheries in the Pacific Northwest; Research of the Oregon Hatchery Research Center
After a 33 year distinguished career as a professor at the University of Guelph in Canada, Dr. David Noakes moved to Oregon to take his post at Oregon State University. During his career, he has published over 120 scientific papers in various areas of fish biology and ecology, has served as editor in chief of two scientific journals, has received many honors, and has held visiting professorships at seven Universities in five different countries around the world. At OSU, he serves as Professor of Fisheries and Wildlife and as senior scientist at the Oregon Hatchery Research Center (OHRC), a cooperative venture between Oregon State University and the Oregon Department of Fisheries and Wildlife dealing with diverse topics of salmonid enhancement and hatchery practices. In this interview, we discussed the research of the OHRC and the controversies associated with hatcheries and stocking of salmonids in the Pacific Northwest.
