SeaFest is a summer event organized by the
Hatfield Marine Science Center in Newport to promote greater public
awareness, understanding, and appreciation of our marine environment
and common natural heritage. SeaFest takes place on Saturday, June 27th,
and is expected to once again attract thousands of visitors to HMSC
and the coast for a fun-filled day of educational activities for people
of all ages. SeaFest is a family event, with many interactive and hands-on
activities designed especially for children. Scientists from
the center create exhibits and displays that allow visitors to touch
and observe live organisms. Kids Zone activities use arts and crafts
to teach children about natural materials, plants, and animals. Dozens
of community organizations and individuals who share our love for the
oceans and the Oregon coast also participate in SeaFest as exhibitors,
presenters, and volunteers.
Shifts (Half-day)
We have AM shifts and PM shifts. AM
shifts are 9:30-1 and PM shifts are 12:30-4:30.
Refreshments
We will provide refreshments,
but not a full lunch. Please help
yourselves throughout your shift. There will be volunteers giving
you breaks, as you need them.
Training session (1/2 hour)
The training session is Tuesday, June 23th, at 6:00
p.m. here at HMSC. We provide pizza and
sodas for our short 30-minute meeting. Most of the jobs should not require
any special training, and are generally only half a day so that you
can enjoy SeaFest and look at the exhibits.
Parking
This year we will have designated special parking for our volunteers.
We will provide you with a map in your training packet.
Tasks (Pick One)
Greeters
Greeters are the Hosts of SeaFest. Your job is to welcome the guests,
answer their questions, and direct them to the various venues.
Break Giver
Please make yourself available to any and all of the Volunteers
and workers so that they can take a break for “whatever.”
Information Booth/Miscellaneous
Please be sure that you have a Program with you so that you can
answer any questions that visitors may have.
Kids’ Zone
Everyone has a bit of the kid in him or her. Help kids with games
or activities. Hand out prizes.
Interpreters
Most of the Interpreters are Visitors’ Center veterans.
Quest
This is part of the Kids’ Zone and is located on the front lawn. It
is a treasure hunt of sorts. Cait has arranged for two types of “quests” for
children of younger and older ages. She will be accompanying some
of the children; so your presence there is important. Children will
be searching for treasures located throughout the grounds. Sounds
like fun!
Tours
Assemble people for tours and help escort them. Learn about our
seawater system, research vessels, or estuaries. Help point out important
items along the tour.
Dock Escort
Greet visitors assembled at the "Vessel Tours Start Here" meeting
place (at the dock). Help control the line for Vessel Tours. Offer
information about vessels and other dock activities.
