ACTIVITIES
HSO has a variety of ongoing activities for fundraising, researching and socialization, which often overlap.
We are committed to supporting both our fellow students at HMSC and the local Newport and Lincoln County communities. Our organization raises funds through several activities throughout the year, which help to support local charities, fund HSO activities, and help offset the cost for student travel to conferences. Our main fundraiser, the annual Holiday Auction at the HMSC Holiday Party, features generous donations from local businesses, and in the past, one-half of our proceeds go to local charities. Past charities and organizations have included the Lincoln County Food Bank, the Siletz Food Bank, the Samaritan Foundation, the Lincoln County Animal Shelter, and My Sister's Place. Thank you to all of our wonderful local donors for their continued support!
Each Wednesday at 10 am, HSO holds a donut hour in the Gladys Valley Marine Studies Building lobby, providing donuts and coffee to the HMSC community. As a member of HSO, you have the opportunity to volunteer with set up, bring in your own and donate to the fund.
When we get the chance, we organize wider-ranging events of all sorts. Most recently, we hosted a rafting trip. HSO members also represent the organization at a variety of other HMSC events, including Relay for Life and the soup kitchen, to raise funds for it. Keep your eye on the email list for details.
The best way to keep up with events is to join our listserv (hmscgradstudents)!
