Campers show what they've found on the beachEach summer, Oregon Sea Grant hosts a number of summer day camps for youth 8 to 18 years old. Each camp is four days long, running Monday through Thursday, 9 am to 3 pm.

Summer day camps at HMSC give young people an opportunity to interact with researchers and learn about the marine environment through hands-on programs and field trips. Topics covered in each camp differ, but range from marine technology to marine mammals.

Summer 2018 Day Camps

Fisheries Investigation

Campers Ages: 15-18

July 9-12, 2018

Fees: $185

Explore the diversity of fish and local fisheries research as we tour research facilities, interact with a variety of fish experts, and participate in ongoing research. Learn how to collect fish using various techniques, conduct dissections to investigate questions, and design and conduct your own unique experiment.

Inside Out

Campers Ages: 13-14

July 16-19, 2018

Fees: $185

Campers will learn about marine animals from the INSIDE as we conduct dissections, work with researchers to determine cause of death, and collect data on feeding habits.  We will also spend plenty of time OUTside the lab exploring nearby ecosystems through tidepooling and shrimp slurping.

Ocean Engineering

Campers Ages: 11-12

July 23-26, 2018

Fees: $185

Learn about marine technology and the wide range of uses by ocean researchers.  Design, build and test engineering devices to complete real life missions.  Campers will build ROVs and attach an underwater camera to see what lies beneath the surface.  We will hear from researchers on wave energy and try our hand at building the most efficient wave energy device.

Habitat Hunt

Campers Ages: 8-10

July 30 - August 2, 2018

Fees: $185

Campers will explore the rocky shores, sandy beach and Yaquina estuary habitats that make the Oregon Coast unique.  Discover the diversity of marine life in each habitat and the unique adaptations that help them thrive.  What makes the habitats similar or different?  How are they connected?  Join us to see for yourself!
