JAPAN IN NOVEMBER 2011This month, Dr. Tim Miller-Morgan be travelling with Mr. Tony Prew of All Japan Koi to Japan, the birthplace of the koi hobby and industry. Mr. Prew has been travelling to Japan annually for over 20 years. They will also be joined by a few koi hobbyists as they visit small family koi farms and export facilities in Niigata, tour some of the larger farms in the south near Hiroshima and attend one of the larger koi shows in Japan. Dr. Tim will be learning about the health management programs utilized by the Japanese koi industry, learning the Japanese approach to assessing koi quality and studying the development agritourism around this industry. We will also hope to meet with researchers at the Niigata Fisheries Research Station, tour the Ring of Fire Aquarium in Osaka and meet with their senior curator to discuss approaches to health management in Japanese public Aquaria.
INDIA IN MARCH 2012In March Dr. Tim will return to Kochin, Kerala, India were he has been invited to participate in a workshop, Sustainable Ornamental Fisheries in India: The Way Forward. Dr. Tim has been asked to present three talks addressing various aspects of ornamental fish health management. He will also participate in a roundtable discussion and industry tours with the idea of assisting in creation of an action plan for the sustainable development of the Indian ornamental fish industry.

The 2012 American Veterinary Medical Association conference will be held in San Diego. The meeting will include four days of aquatic animal training with a focus on aquarium fish medicine. These sesssions will be jointly presented by the AVMA and the World Aquatic Veterinary Medical Association (WAVMA).

The aquarium industry is a worldwide industry with many operators in various steps in the chain of custody. Legislation applying to fish health, biosecurity, invasive species and animal welfare plays an increasing role in this industry. In the past it was possible to be actively involved in this industry with only a hobby background. Nowadays this is no longer enough.
Knowledge on above topics is necessary and if not present incidents may lead to mortalities that seriously affect the economics of the company and to a bad reputation of that company. This will also reflect on the industry in a negative sense and will lead to increased legislation with severe restrictions to the trade. Trade interruptions or even bans on imports or exports may be the result. For this reason education is crucial, especially education with strong practical aspects.
