Summer Day Camps

Campers show what they've found on the beachEach summer, Oregon Sea Grant hosts a number of summer day camps for youth 8 to 18 years old.  Each camp is four days long, running Monday through Thursday, 9 am to 3 pm.

Summer day camps at HMSC give young people an opportunity to interact with researchers and learn about the marine environment through hands-on programs and field trips. Topics covered in each camp differ, but range from marine technology to marine mammals.

Dates for our 2013 Summer day camps are listed below, registration will begin in January.  In the meantime, check out our 2012 schedule and photos below!

Summer 2013 Daycamps

WATER WONDER

Campers Ages: 8-9
July 8-11, 2013

$170 

Discover the wondrous world of aquatic animals through fieldtrips, dissections, hands-on activities, and experiments in our wet labs.  Campers will investigate the power of water, and explore how organisms are adapted to life in a variety of freshwater and marine environments including creeks, estuaries, rocky shores and sandy beaches.

ALL THINGS FISHY - FULL

Campers Ages: 10-11
July 15-18, 2013

$170 

Investigate a variety of fish, their habitats, and fisheries research in this fun and fascinating camp.  Participants will tour HMSC research facilities, interact with a variety of fish experts, and participate in activities at the Oregon Hatchery Research Center.  Campers will learn how to collect fish using various techniques, conduct dissections to investigate questions, and design and run unique experiments. 

MARINE MAMMALS - FULL

Campers Ages: 12-14
July 22-25, 2013

$170 

Learn about the diversity of marine mammals and their amazing adaptations by conducting experiments and participating in fieldtrips.   Discover how researchers track marine mammals and determine cause of death, and look for marine mammals as we explore nearshore environments.

MARINE INVESTIGATIONS

Camps Ages:  15-18
July 29 - August 1, 2013

$170

Delve into marine science as we work with researchers to explore coastal habitats and the diverse species that inhabit them. Conduct your own experiments, go kayaking, design and assemble ROVs (Remotely Operated Vehicles) equipped with cameras to complete underwater missions.

FAMILY CAMP

Ages:  5 years - Adult
August 5-8, 2013

$170 (per person)

Dive into the marine environment as we work with researchers to explore coastal habitats and the diverse species that inhabit them. Families will setup their own aquaria, explore nearshore habitats including tidepools and the Yaquina Bay estuary, conduct experiments, and design and assemble their own underwater robots (ROVs) for a competition.  All children must be accompanied by an adult.

Registration for 2013 Summer Day Camps will begin Monday, January 7, 2013.

Pre-registration is required, and we do not accept walk-ins.  Registration includes all instructional materials and field trips. Lunches are not included.  Detailed information about each camp will be sent before the camps begin.  Payment must accompany registration. Make checks payable to HMSC Sea Grant.  Sorry, no refunds.
