Summer Day Camps

Campers show what they've found on the beachEach summer, Oregon Sea Grant hosts a number of summer day camps for youth 8 to 18 years old.  Each camp is four days long, running Monday through Thursday, 9 am to 3 pm.

Summer day camps at HMSC give young people an opportunity to interact with researchers and learn about the marine environment through hands-on programs and field trips. Topics covered in each camp differ, but range from marine technology to marine mammals.

Our schedule for 2014 Summer day camps is now available below.  Registration will begin on January 6th.

Summer 2014 Daycamps

Ocean of Opportunity

Campers Ages: 15-18
July 14-17, 2014

$175

Explore a sea of marine careers as we meet a variety of scientists and collect data.  Go behind-the-scenes of marine labs and out in the field to learn about and practice research techniques.  Design and construct instruments to collect data. Help researchers conduct a necropsy and collect samples for further analysis.

Inside Out Camp

Campers Ages: 13-14
July 21-24, 2014

$175

Learn about marine animals from the inside out as we conduct dissections, work with researchers to determine cause of death, and collect data on feeding habits of
fish by analyzing stomach contents. We will also spend plenty of time outside the lab exploring nearby ecosystems through kayaking, tidepooling, and shrimp slurping.

Forest to Sea

Campers Ages: 11-12
July 28-31, 2014

$175

Explore the Oregon Coast from forests to the open ocean.  Compare the different habitats and their inhabitants as we investigate the connections between various ecosystems through a variety of field explorations and hands-on experiments.

Patterns of Science

Campers Ages:  8-10
August 4-7, 2014

$175

What patterns are hidden in animal shapes, structures and behaviors?  Find out through hands-on activities and observing and interacting with live animals.  Through field trips, identify patterns at the sandy beach, salt marsh and rocky shore, then use our discoveries to make predictions and test hypotheses.
