Maintaining the health of the aquatic animals is a huge task, much of which takes place behind the scenes. Meet our well-trained and energetic husbandry team:
Like many at the HMSC Visitor Center, Dennis wears many hats, dividing his time and expertise among multiple programs. His home base is as the manager of the aquatic animal teaching laboratory in the West Wing. As the Curator of Husbandry at the HMSC Visitor Center, Dennis oversees the aquarists, interns and practicum students, and he supervises all aquatic animal husbandry procedures. Dennis is also an Aquatic Animal Health and Husbandry Specialist, assisting extension veterinarian Dr. Tim Miller-Morgan in providing services and education to the ornamental fish industry. He works closely with the koi sector of the industry, and he has completed the Koi Health Advisor Program, an integral life support and fish health training program sponsored by the Associated Koi Clubs of America.
Dennis holds an Associates of Applied Science Degree in Aquarium Science from Oregon Coast Community College (OCCC). While a student at OCCC he worked part-time at the HMSC Visitor Center where he was instrumental in building several exhibits and facilities for research and animal care. Dennis has also completed Cornell University’s Recirculating Aquaculture Systems Short Course and the Canadian Aquaculture Institute’s Experimental Fish online training program.
CORY BAKERCory has always had a deep affinity for the ocean and its inhabitants, particularly invertebrates. Over her academic career she received her Associates of Science from Truckee Meadows Community College, a Bachelors of Science with an emphasis in environmental and marine sciences from The Evergreen State College, and is currently enrolled in the Aquarium Science Certificate Program at the Oregon Coast Community College.
Her future aspirations are to work as an aquarist while continuing on to graduate school. She hopes to conduct research on the potential impacts of jellyfish populations and other marine species.
At HMSC Cory maintains tanks and cares for the animals of the visitor center.
Jordan Fry became a fish hobbyist about 6 years ago, and to learn more about aquariums, he spent the summer of 2007 volunteering and working at a local pet fish store in Portland. After spending a year as a pre-business student at OSU, he enrolled in the Oregon Coast Community College's Aquarium Science Progam. Jordan's potential aspirations include working in the ornamental fish industry, and pursuing a degree in ichthyology or business. As the Visitor Center’s senior aquarist, Jordan's responsibilities include managing the Visitor Center animals, aquarists and volunteer feeders.
Dr. Tim Miller-Morgan provides veterinary care for the HMSC Visitor Center research and exhibit animals. He also provides educational programming and service to the aquarium industry in Oregon and beyond, to help wholesalers, retailers, and hobbyists succeed in the rearing, husbandry, and health care of ornamental aquatic animals in the aquarium or pond environment. He led the development of a new two-year Aquarium Science degree and one-year certification program at Oregon Coast Community College, and travels widely to educate aquatic pet owners, breeders, importers, and retailers about the proper care and handling of ornamental fish.

Sid has been a fish hobbyist since he was a kid, but until recently, he hadn't chosen aquarium science as a career path. Instead, he spent more than 20 years as a chef and small business owner in Illinois. But last year he made a big change and moved to Newport to attend the Aquarium Science program at Oregon Coast Community College. Sid is also the aquarist for the wet labs in the Education Wing at HMSC. He maintains the tanks and gives daily care to the animals who are featured in our school and camp marine education programs.
