Michael Liu is originally from Taiwan, and has a diverse background, earning a Bachelor's degree in Plant Pathology and a Master's degree in Zoology from National Taiwan University in the 90's. Following 2 years of service in the Taiwanese Army, Michael worked for an NGO for 3 years before coming to OSU to work in Fisheries Science and Science Education where he is pursuing a Ph.D. Michael has worked at Hatfield Marine Science Center as aquarist and senior aquarist for several years, and through that work became interested in FCL. One of his duties at HMSC was to promote the ornamental fish health program supported by Oregon Sea Grant, and that is why he is now working on Koi hobbyists for his dissertation. Specifically, Michael is interested in how hobbyists learn about thier hobby in FCL settings through self-motivated and self-directed ways.
