"Along the Oregon coast, millions of tiny mud shrimp, currently being decimated by a parasite, have a new champion in their camp. Ralph Breitenstein, a retired gastroenterologist, devotes most of his waking hours to studying, classifying and reporting on the creatures in hopes of saving them from extinction..."

“I really enjoy the other volunteers -  they are so considerate
and friendly. You see I come up from Florida about once a year and
spend a week or sometimes three volunteering at the Center. There is
always something to learn and the other volunteers are so patient with
me. Through the years I have made many friends. I do so enjoy your
e-mails; they keep me informed and eager to return.”
-- Peggy Muro

"I so enjoy meeting the visitors and being able to allow them to
meet our sea critters up close and personal. (Once a teacher, always
ateacher). I appreciate the opportunity to help them learn about the
different environments in which the critters live and who eachcompetes
with/lives peacefully with for their way of life.”
-- Suzy Roberts

“I enjoy volunteering at HMSC because it gives me a chance to learn more.” -- Colinda Schroeder

“My first visit to the Visitor Center was in the summer of 1997. I
toured the exhibits and watched the people in the orange jackets work.
Before leaving I asked one how a person could do what they were doing. A
couple of minutes later I had an application form in hand. I still like
the way the VC operates, and enjoy working with the other volunteers
and the staff. I appreciate what we do for the community.”
-- Jack Woods

“I like volunteering at HMSC mostly because of the people who work
there & show us the friendly welcome & appreciation of what we
do & guide us into new knowledge when we have new animals so at the
end of the day we know new things & are able to teach the visitors
how to take care of our tide pools & they learn that anenomes are
animals not plants! Most of all it keeps us seniors on a feeling of
being useful instead of couch potatoes!”
-- Rosalyn Woods
