Classroom support

School Programs are offered year-round to share current marine research with students. In addition to touring the Visitor Center and Hatfield Marine Science center labs, teachers may choose from a variety of age-appropriate field and lab experiences designed to enrich the classroom science curriculum.

Programs we've offered in the past include

  • Marine mammal programs.
  • Field investigations, outdoor collection and identification trips or a tour of a research vessel.
  • Creature Feature, hands-on biology labs.
  • Ecological investigations with an oceanography emphasis.

To read about the latest program offerings - including educational goals, objectives, benchmarks, content, vocabulary and bibliographic information - visit the HMSC Education Program pages; for more information contact Maureen Collson.

We also offer traveling kits that can help classroom teachers explain marine science concepts. Contact the education program to see what's available for a modest rental fee.

The HMSC Bookstore, which specializes in natural history, carries a wide variety of educational resources for educators and students including books, posters, CDs and videos. Open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Thursday thru Monday.

The Guin Library and the Sea Grant curriculum library at the center are open to the public from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday thru Friday. Try the searchable online curriculum database, with topics ranging from allocation of ocean resources to the water cycle.

Please note:

With the retirement of longtime marine educator Vicki Osis, we regret that we are no longer able to offer master's degree level summer programs for teachers. You may contact the Oregon State University Graduate School for information about other graduate programs that may serve your needs.
