
A native of Newport, Maureen has worked at Hatfield Marine Science Center (HMSC) for more than 20 years. She started as an office support staff person for the Coastal Oregon Marine Experiment Station (COMES), went on to manage the HMSC Housing and Development, and then worked in the HMSC Business Office before joining the Oregon Sea Grant's Marine Education Program in 2001. She currently is the Admin. Program Assistant for the HMSC Visitor Center as well as the HMSC-based Sea Grant Extension Programs. She can be reached at maureen.collson@oregonstate.edu .

Tracy has a BS in Marine Biology from Texas A & M University and a Master’s in Marine Science from the College of William & Mary in Virginia. She has worked in public education, research and resource management for 18 years in organizations including Virginia Institute of Marine Science, National Marine Fisheries Service, Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, Round Rock Independent School District, SeaCamp and Newfound Harbor Marine Institute.
As Marine Education Coordinator, Tracy oversees Oregon Sea Grant’s youth and family programs at Hatfield Marine Science Center, including k-12 school programs, and summer day camps. Her focus is coordination of marine educators and wet lab facilities, program development and evaluation, and professional development for educators. Meet the youth and family education program staff
As an Aquatic Animal Health and Husbandry Specialist, Dennis assists Dr. Tim Miller-Morgan, Oregon Sea Grant’s Extension veterinarian for aquatic pets, in providing services and education to the ornamental fish industry. He works closely with the koi sector of the industry, and he has completed the Koi Health Advisor Program, an integral life support and fish health training program sponsored by the Associated Koi Clubs of America.
Dennis also serves as the Curator of Husbandry at the HMSC Visitor Center, overseeing the aquarists, intern and practicum students, as well as supervising all aquatic animal husbandry procedures. Meet the husbandry staff
Dennis holds an Associates of Applied Science Degree in Aquarium Science from Oregon Coast Community College (OCCC). While a student at OCCC he worked part-time at the HMSC Visitor Center where he was instrumental in building several exhibits and facilities for research and animal care. Dennis has also completed Cornell University’s Recirculating Aquaculture Systems Short Course and the Canadian Aquaculture Institute’s Experimental Fish online training program.

Dr. Bill Hanshumaker has been educating the general public and other self-selected audiences in free-choice science education since 1977. With more than 16 years of experience at the Oregon Museum and Science and Industry and 16 years at OSU’s Hatfield Marine Science Center, Bill has had opportunities to develop, deliver, and evaluate science curricula for audiences of all ages and backgrounds. Bill is responsible for many of the exhibits and events at the HMSC Visitor Center, where he not only designs exhibit material, but also uses it to study how people learn in an aquarium-science center setting. He serves as an educational consultant to researchers at the HMSC and at OSU, and to state and federal agencies interested in developing interpretive materials to explain science to the public. He also conducts hands-on workshops in topics ranging from marine animal dissection to fossil identification for HMSC visitors, classes and special events. NANCEE HUNTERNancee Hunter is the former Director of Education for Oregon Sea Grant, but she stepped down from her position August 2011 to enter a PhD program at Portland State University. She continues to work for Oregon Sea Grant by working on grants, partnerships, and other special projects. For example, Nancee serves on numerous leadership teams in the state and region, including as a Co-Chair to the West Coast Governor’s Ocean Awareness and Literacy Action Coordination Team. Prior to her work with Sea Grant, Nancee was the Director of Education at the National Geographic Society. Her expertise is in curriculum development, teacher professional development and educational programming for both formal and free-choice learning centers, particularly around the use of geovisualization tools that incorporate earth systems data. Dr. Tim Miller-Morgan provides veterinary care for the HMSC Visitor Center research and exhibit animals. He also provides educational programming and service to the aquarium industry in Oregon and beyond, to help wholesalers, retailers, and hobbyists succeed in the rearing, husbandry, and health care of ornamental aquatic animals in the aquarium or pond environment. He led the development of a new two-year Aquarium Science degree and one-year certification program at Oregon Coast Community College, and travels widely to educate aquatic pet owners, breeders, importers, and retailers about the proper care and handling of ornamental fish.

McKenzie came to HMSC with a strong environmental education background. She was an AmeriCorps member with the USFWS Oregon Coast Complex, served as a supervisor and guide at the Kayak Shack in Waldport, and she volunteered for the USDA Forest Service in Siuslaw National Forest. McKenzie works in the Visitor Center as a Marine Education Program Assistant, or “SPOD” (Staff Person on Duty) and as a researcher studying how visitors learn, she also works as a marine educator with visiting school groups. SHAWN ROWEShawn Rowe is the Acting Director of Education for Oregon Sea Grant. He is also Assistant Professor in the Department of Science and Math Education at Oregon State University. Shawn oversees the Visitor Center at Hatfield Marine Science Center (HMSC), including the K-12, youth and family education programs held at HMSC.
Shawn's research focuses on studying how people learn beyond the school environment, and how talk and activity work together to help people absorb and make sense of what they see. He joined the staff of Sea Grant Extension after receiving his PhD from Washington University in St. Louis. Along with Dr. Olga Rowe, he has carried out research in history and science museums both in the US and in Ukraine. His research at Sea Grant combines academic work on free-choice learning with practice-based research in the Visitor Center. He also works closely with graduate students in the Free-Choice Learning PhD, MS, Environmental Science, and Marine Resource Management programs at OSU. Becca Schiewe has a BS in Fisheries and Wildlife Biology from Oregon State and is currently working towards an MS in Science Education at Oregon State. While finishing up her undergraduate degree, Becca worked at HMSC as a summer intern in 2003. After graduating, she worked as an avian field biologist and environmental educator. Becca became reconnected with the HMSC community while working as a Coastal Wildlife Education Specialist for the US Fish and Wildlife Oregon Coast Complex through the Americorps program. In 2007 she began working in the Visitor Center as Museum Assistant and in 2008 became Volunteer Coordinator. Becca divides her position working both in the Visitor Center and in the office. She works directly with the public and visiting school groups, and also handles the administrative duties associated with our active volunteer base including volunteer recruitment, training, and recognition events. Lynne graduated from Michigan State University, where she majored in pre-law and political science and minored in art history. She is also a certified paralegal. She has managed or owned bookstores for the past 30 years, including opening and managing the Borders' brothers second store in Birmingham, MI, managing the Western Washington University bookstore, and co-owning a book and game store in Walla Walla, WA. Lynne has managed the HMSC/OSU Visitor Center bookstore since 2001. In 2008 she launched the bookstore's online shopping presence and has been expanding it ever since. Lynne also produces print media for the Visitor Center.
