Robert Suryan is a co-author on a new paper in the journal PLoS ONE examining changes in at-sea distribution, breeding performance and nutritional stress of kittiwakes at two sites in the Pribilof Islands with contrasting population trajectories (St. Paul - declining, St. George - stable). Birds at the two colonies exhibited distinct foraging patterns, and the authors assert that "Diminishing food resources in nearby shelf habitats may have contributed to kittiwake population declines at St Paul, possibly driven by increased adult mortality or breeding desertion due to high foraging effort and nutritional stress."
