Joel Hedgpeth, Head of Yaquina Bay Biological Laboratory 1965 - 1972

joelJoel Hedgpeth earned his Ph.D. in Zoology from the Univesity of California, Berkeley in 1952. He went on to teach at the University of Texas, the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, the University of the Pacific, and then Oregon State University, where he became the head of the Yaquina Bay Biological Lab at the Marine Science Center in the east wing. He had a reputation as a prolific writer with works ranging from poems about the sea to collaborations with world renouned marine biologist, Ed Ricketts. He was also an avid conservationist and spent much of his time protecting Pacific coastal marine environments from California to Oregon. Hedgpeth was known worldwide for his work on sea spiders and for conducting decades worth of marine research and field studies in a wide variety of environments.
