Learning Together
While you can find engaging activities for children throughout the campus on Marine Science Day, some of our spaces are specifically geared toward children.
Kid Zone - Education Wing - open all day
Are you looking for an area specializing in activities geared toward Marine Science Day’s youngest visitors? Then check out the KID ZONE. Hosted by Oregon Sea Grant's Marine Education team, the Kid Zone is in the Hatfield Education Wing. Parents and educators are also invited to come to the Kid Zone to discover K-12 programs and resources available at Hatfield.
This year's featured Kid Zone activities include: Cute Crawly Crabby Explorations – Meet and investigate a cast of cute crawly crabbies (hermit crab, shore crab, porcelain crab) and compare how their different shells help them protect themselves. Participants will also use crab claw models to see how differently they eat!
Marine Debris Detectives – Investigate the types and sources of marine debris through a variety of activities, including a Plinko game, washing machine demo, microplastic mosaic art, and more. Make a commitment to a daily task you can do to reduce plastic use and see if you can stick to it!
Kid’s Reading Nook and Quiet Space - Guin Library - open all day
You will also find a quiet space for kids in the Guin Library where children can have a little downtime and rest. Marine science children's books will be available. The librarians will also have games and puzzles out for visitors to enjoy.
Sounds of the Sea - Visitor Center Auditorium - 2:30 to 3 p.m.
This insightful and interactive presentation learn how researchers use hydrophones and bioacoustics to identify unique sounds of the sea. The audience will have a chance to test their ability to identify underwater sounds during an interactive “sounds of the sea” game. This activity is family-friendly and fun for all ages. Presented by Oregon Sea Grant Marine Education team.
