Welcome to the Visitor Center

The Oregon Sea Grant-operated Visitor Center is the public education wing of the Hatfield Marine Science Center in Newport. More than 150,000 people pass through the doors of the Visitor Center every year to view exhibits, participate in hands-on activities and learn about marine animals and issues facing the coast.

Octopus Update

Octopus feeding presentations will be postponed at this time. Our current octopus recently laid eggs while on exhibit. During this time, our animal husbandry staff will let her focus on taking care of her eggs. (pictured to the right)

We like to keep a backup octopus for when the tank's occupant needs a break or is ready to be released back into the ocean to breed. We gladly accept live octopus donations from the fishing community, recreational fishers, tide poolers and beach combers that have a state issued shellfish license. Contact our aquarist if you have an octopus to donate.

Tide pool Touch Tanks

Roll up your sleeves and touch living marine animals in our tide pool tanks! Gently touch fish, abalone, and sea stars. Discover what happens when you touch the sticky tentacles of a sea anemone. Get a "hug" from the sea urchins. Friendly volunteers are on hand to answer your questions and help you explore.

Tsunami Wave Challenge

How do tsunamis affect structures on the coast?  Take the Tsunami Wave Tank Engineering Challenge! See if you can build something that will withstand the energy of a tsunami wave.

Erosion Tank

Visitors of all ages can experiment with conditions that cause coastal erosion by using the interactive Erosion Tank. First, learn about the problem of coastal erosion. Next, design something that will help protect the beach from erosion.  What effects do waves have on a beach protected by riprap?  How about a beach with a sea wall or a jetty?  Build these structures and find out!
