Welcome to the OSU Hatfield Marine Science Center in Newport, Oregon. Our mission of research, education and outreach in marine sciences through collaborative partnerships includes professional colleagues from a variety of disciplines. Our unique assets, including interdisciplinary, inter-agency research programs, high quality seawater facilities and access to the Pacific Ocean and coast, allow us to offer world-class facilities and collaborative opportunities to interested researchers.
Visiting scientists engage in a variety of ways, from sabbatical and other long-term collaborative visits to presentations at our weekly research seminar, participation in workshops and conducting experimental research using our wet and dry labs.
We encourage you to contact me to discuss collaborative research opportunities, or see our webpage on conducting research on the HMSC campus.
Dr. Bob Cowen, Director, OSU Hatfield Marine Science Center
The Lavern Weber Visiting Scientist Fellowship is one of the many ways HMSC fosters marine research through collaboration. Visiting Scientists bring expertise in diverse disciplines, and lay the foundation for professional collaborations across universities and agencies. Through the Weber Visiting Scientist Program, distinguished researchers become part of HMSC’s research community, sharing expertise and diverse perspectives with professional colleagues, students, and local citizens. Formal presentations, informal conversations and collaborative projects serve to initiate lasting professional friendships.
Funded by donations to a named endowment and matching funding from the OSU Research Office, the Fellowship honors Dr. Lavern Weber, who directed HMSC from 1977 until 2002. To contribute, click here and indicate "Lavern Weber Visiting Scientist Endowment" in the box marked Area you'd like to support found under Option#1 .
The program supports a distinguished scientist for visits of up to several months duration. Click here for profiles of the visiting scientists.
