Sampling Technologies

The plankton lab uses a number of state-of-the-art sampling technologies and ‘tried-and-true’ traditional approaches to investigate the events occurring on the scale of an individual fish in the plankton. Fine-scale shadowgraphic techniques are used by ISIIS to image plankton in the field, and the images are processed using high-speed computer technology. A coupled net system enables the simultaneous collection of biological samples of fish with their prey, critical for the interpretation of their otolith microstructure for evaluating larval fish growth and survival.
